About Barbados

The world's favourite beach destination?

What can be said about Barbados that hasn't been said a million times before?  Arguably the world's favourite beach destination, and certainly the most established in the Caribbean, Barbados is a little gem - with a blue-chip property market (and, alas, prices) to boot!

In fact, a 2006 survey for Business Barbados concluded that (save for a couple of peculiar locations) properties on the island have not experienced a dip in value since 1957.

Can I afford Barbados?

Barbados' supremacy in the Caribbean league means that some stretches of coast, particularly around Hole Town on the west, are priced out of normal budgets, with most villas sporting seven figure price tags.  However, shrewd property investors may still find surprising value by considering up and coming areas of the island, such as the south east, where the beaches are arguably even more beautiful.

Natural beauty

Whether you seek perfect soft beaches (unlike most Caribbean islands which are volcanic, Barbodos is made up of limestone and coral, so boasts some of the finest powder sand found anywhere), terrific surf, refined sophistication or the up-tempo, festive feel, Barbados has it all.

It is the most easterly island of the Lesser Antilles islands, and as such, two oceans grace its shores – the Caribbean Sea on its west, with calm protected waters and a safe, gentle shelf,  and the wavier, more dramatic Atlantic Ocean to the east. The two bodies of water meet on the island’s southern shores, where smaller hotels – and legions of windsurfers – enjoy the best of both worlds.

Caribbean chic
Barbados offers luxurious hotels, inns and restaurants lining its many beautiful beaches, and some spectacular villas on the famous millionaires’ playground - The Platinum Coast.

Barbados’ premier festival, Crop Over, which traditionally celebrated the end of the sugar season, lasts for five weeks and includes markets, carnival shows, Calypso concerts and colorful parades. Other special events also draw visitors: Holders Season, held in March, is internationally renowned for its series of opera, theatre and music performances.  The Barbados Jazz Festival has live performances seven nights in a row, each held at a different island venue.

A particularly cosmopolitan island, some of the world's finest restaurants and designer boutiques are found here.  Great for shopping, Broad Street in Bridgetown, the island’s capital, is home to several large department stores and duty-free shops offering prices that can be 20 to 40 percent lower those than back home. Sunbury Plantation House, which dates from 1660, houses a collection of antiques, including carriages and farm implements. Other homes worth touring include St. Nicholas Abbey and the Francia Plantation. Take a tram ride through Harrison’s Cave to view stalactites, stalagmites, waterfalls and pools.  Stroll through Andromeda Gardens, or tee off at one of three golf courses, including the Green Monkey, at the rebuilt Sandy Lane resort (with the most expensive green fees in the world!). The Garrison Savannah horse races are a hot ticket and other popular sports include cricket (the national sport), tennis, squash and polo.
